Suspension Tuning

Steering rack and dampers.

With the wishbone installed it was time for the steering rack and front dampers.

The first step was getting the steering rack put on top of the mounts, this part was quite easy.  There were no stuck pieces, and once the mounts were tightened I screwed on the track rod ends.  These will need to be adjusted later when the car is finished.

The last step on the steering rack is attaching the universal joint that will connect through a rod to the steering wheel.  This piece was quite a struggle.

The problem was that the bolt shown does not fit into the other side of the universal joint.  It goes through one end just fine but is too high to fit into the exit hole.  I spent a long time attempting to force the bolt through, but with no luck.

So I decided I needed to bend the joint.  At first I tried to thread the bolt through and tighten it to bend the joint.  But the better approach was to use a vice to bend the joint flanges in.  After doing this a few times, the joint was finally tightened enough to nudge the bolt through.

The next step was to install the dampers.  These looked relatively simple - two springs and a few bolts.  These were also a tricky fit.  The dampers do not align well with the upper bracket in the chassis. In the end, the best method was to put a pump jack under the lower wishbone, and move the lower wishbone up or down to align the hole on the top of the damper with the bracket.

Next onto the brakes and wingstays!
