Delivery Day!

Saturday, Jan 16 - Delivery Day.  After months and months of admiring pictures and watching Caterham racing videos, the car was here!

Although the car was ready to be picked up at the shipping depot, there was a lot to do to get it home.  I opted to pick it up with a trailer instead of paying for a delivery service.  A $40 rental fee instead of a $500 delivery charge was a no-brainer.

What could go wrong?  After driving 35 mins to the rental location, I discovered the wiring on the towing light adapter was bad.  So, with an hour to go before the scheduled pickup time, I had to find a new ride.  Luckily, I had a second car available to tow the trailer.  Although it meant an extra hour of shuttling vehicles, it would work.

Truck problems sorted out, I was finally pulling up to the freight depot.  There were two items, a large wooden crate and a pallet of cardboard boxes.  The wooden crate was loaded into the trailer with a forklift.  The cardboard boxes were loaded in and around the wooden crate.  I was glad that I had rented the trailer with high sides, otherwise I would not have been able to take all the boxes.

After securing the load, it was time to get the car home!  It took the good part of an hour, sticking to back roads and taking turns slowly.

The next big challenge was moving the chassis up the steep driveway.  Instead of trying to carry the chassis up into the garage, I decided to put the crate into the garage and then unbox the crate.  To do this, I backed the trailer up into the garage and enlisted the help of some neighbors to push the crate off the trailer and in.

I next removed the walls and top from the crate, leaving the chassis bolted to the bottom pallet.

I pulled the bottom pallet with the chassis back slightly out of the garage to make room for the Caterham.  I then placed the jack stands in an estimated spot on the garage floor.

I again enlisted the help of neighbors to move the chassis.  Four of us picked up the chassis and moved it into the garage where we put it gently onto the jack stands.  To protect the chassis from scratches, I had covered the jack stands with electrical tape.  I did a bit of repositioning until the car was perfectly in place.

After that I took time to move the boxes into the garage.  Sticking them around the back and out of the way.  Ready to build!
